China > > Chongqing

Chongqing city is the seat of Chongqing Municipality, home to 30 million people. It's best known as being (approximately) at the start of the Three Gorges boat trip down the Yangtze.

Overview

Orientation: Chongqing is a sprawling metropolis at the intersection of the Chang Jiang (Yangtze) and Jialing Jiang rivers. The airport, north train station, and Madame Tan's hostel are all north of the rivers. Between the two are the city center and the Liberation Monument (Jiefang Bei).

Shopping: The pedestrianized area near the Liberation Monument has several large department stores, a McDonalds, KFC, the Foreign Language Bookstore, and a Carrefour.

The main Bank of China has moved since the 2000 edition of the LP. Now it's up the road from the Liberation Monument. The cashpoints there work with foreign ATM cards (as well as credit cards). The maximum you can withdraw is 2500Y.

Internet Cafe

Widely available. There's one over the bus station at the train station.

It takes 3 days to get a visa extension.

Local

Taxi
Price: 5Y flag fall
Taxis have tiny boots which are mostly filled by the mandatory lpg cylinders. Two large rucksacks probably won't fit. Drivers can be very arsy about dirty bags in the interior of the car.
Taxi boot
From: Chongqing airport
To: City centre
Price: 80YTime: 30 minutes
Convenient, but lpg cylinders in the taxi boots mean 3 people + caving gear will fill the taxi.
Taxis at the train station
Bus
Numerous, usually overcrowded, buses.
From: Chongqing airport
To: Chaotianmen
Price: 3YTime: 50 minutes
Buses every 20 minutes or so from the local bus station next to the long distance bus station at Chaotianmen. At the airport, to find the bus stop walk out of the airport and cross the highway. The stop on the next street parallel to the highway.
From: Chongqing airport
To: CAAC office, Chongqing city centre
Price: 15Y
The most economical way to get from the airport to the city centre, however the touts outside the CAAC office are very obnoxious and it can be difficult to get a taxi there.
