Houping 2004 Expedition

Overview

Dates:

9 May 2004 - 2 June 2004

Location:

Houping Township Wulong County, Chongqing Municipality, China

Background:

Houping is a 40km2 area of limestone that has yielded 23km of surveyed passage thus far. The cave system is characterized by a complicated network of huge abandoned fossil phreas on several different levels and small immature streamways draining to the southwest.

Objectives:

Aims of the expedition include connecting Er Wang Dong and San Wang Dong to form an 18km system, connecting several of the dolines visible on the attached topo map to the same system, and locating the main streamway. To date only small inlets have been mapped, which do not account for a fraction of the ~5 cumec resurgence at Ma Wan Dong, so we hope to drop into a large active master cave from a promising lead spotted on the last expedition.
