Liangshan 2009 Expedition

Overview

Dates:

14 July 2009 - 28 August 2009

Location:

Yanyuan County, Sichuan Province, China

Background:

A 2006 reconnaissance expedition confirmed that Yanyuan is a large area of limestone karst with numerous cave entrances, and has potential for caves that are up to 2,100m deep. We only had time to descend into a few cave entrances at intermediate elevations, one of which is still ongoing 120 metres below ground.

Objectives:

The expedition will return Yanyuan to explore cave entrances on the uppermost limestone plateau. The expedition will also continue exploration for caves in a remote area of Gansu that has only recently opened up to foreigners.
